Out-and-Return Record Attempt
This is my March 27, 2021 flight from Seminole-Lake Gliderport near Orlando, Florida in my Mini LAK FES. I've declared a 124-mile out-and-return task for a new state 13.5m class record, but conditions are looking blue and weak. Will I make it? Will I push too hard and land out? You'll have to watch and find out! By the way, check out soaramerica.wordpress.com for info about my upcoming attempt to soar all the way across the United States.

Aerotow Problem

Watch this 30-second clip (recorded using the Condor simulator), and see if you can figure out what the glider pilot should be doing but isn't. My first comment below gives the answer, but don't cheat!
Sharing the Air with Student Pilot Flying Solo
Переглядів 6854 роки тому
This is footage from my 7/27/19 flight from Moontown airport (3M5). The other glider is our club's L-23 Blanik and is flown by student pilot Dan Beck. This was his sixth solo flight (25th flight total), and he was up for SIX HOURS! (Upon landing, he had a total of 32 hours in sailplanes, ~10 of which were solo.) Dan and I are old flying friends: he used to fly paragliders while I was flying han...
Turn Signal Confusion
Переглядів 7845 років тому
The glider pilot moves left to signal the tow pilot to turn right. The tow pilot gets confused and turns left instead, resulting in a good bit of slack in the rope. What lessons can you learn from this, and what suggestions can you make for preventing this or for best dealing with it when it happens?
Multiplace Alabama State Records Attempt 6/15/18
Переглядів 6925 років тому
This is a flight Daniel Morrow and I made June 15, 2018 at our home site, Moontown Airport, just outside Huntsville, Alabama and home of the Huntsville Soaring Club. It was a state record attempt in our club's Blanik L-23 glider. Man, we had fun! Thanks to Jim Burch for generously serving as our tow pilot and Official Observer.
Wingtip Watching Experiment

Don't watch this video, if you just ate a large pizza! Watch the wingtip, and see if it makes you dizzy or nauseated. Beware: the effect will probably be greatest after you stop watching. Thanks in advance for letting me know the result of this experiment. This video was filmed 8/4/18 in my LS-3 5-10 miles north of Moontown airport near Huntsville, Alabama.

This is a flight I made June 9, 2018 at my home site, Moontown Airport, just outside Huntsville, Alabama and home of the Huntsville Soaring Club. It was a record attempt and involved rain-dodging. What a blast (though I'd have been fine without the rain)!

Cross-country potential didn't look very good at takeoff. To see how it turned out, just watch and see (or skip to the last minute). This was day 5 of my first sailplane-flying trip to Florida. It was a nice break from winter!

This is a June 11, 2017 flight in my LS-3 from Moontown airport (my home airport) near Huntsville, Alabama. I team-fly with a couple of local pilots and then do some light stretching on my own. Cloudbase was a bit low (for my taste) for much XC, but we had plenty of fun, anyway.

    • @EricCarden
      @EricCarden Місяць тому

      I don't remember (and haven't flown this glider or one like it in over four years), but my guess is that I was just adding some extra "insurance" against the airbrakes extending on their own (not that I remember that being a concern with this glider). Note that my fingers aren't wrapped around the handle, so the only thing my hand could inadvertently do to the handle is push it down. (As long as the handle is down, pushing or pulling would have no effect.) I might have also considered it a convenient place to keep my hand that was fairly close to the release handle, making it a quick move from there to the release handle should I need to release quickly in an emergency. I just can't remember. 🙂

    I am a guy that wants to learn to fly with hang gliders. I got my solo in a 152 Cessna over 43 years ago and have not flown since. But now I am in a better position in my life to allow my self the thrill of hang gliding. At 23 I loved flying more than my body building but I wanted to utilize my youth for as long as I possible, which I have done in spite of injuries. I am a retired Merchant Marine sailor and live in Tijuana, Mexico, so great weather. I want to learn as much as possible before I buy a hang glider. At first I thought that a Ultra light trike with a small Electric motor for $17000. and built at the factory, would be real nice. I came across hang gliding and thought that hang gliding is the ultimate in flying, the peace and beauty of everything around you was too much for me and decided to look into schools and the hang gliders them selves. The effect of the weather is very interesting so here I am learning about Thermals. Thank you very much. Kevin from sunny Mexico.

    This is cool. I’m just now learning about and getting interested in gliders/sailplanes. I think this is so wild and amazing. Where was this all of my life. I’ve been a life long aviation/pilot enthusiast. Here I am Middle Aged just learning about this. Cool video, You should make more. I’m trying to learn and understand this science of flying. But how do you keep from going dizzy or air sick from constant circling?? Seems like the constant circling would make one sick or dizzy. I’m getting dizzy just watching it.

    PURE GOLD! PG pilot here, currently on my thermal-coring progression course... I'm literally obsessed with thermals. Lots of advice around me, but none of it seems to be consistent... Which is exciting to me as it leaves a lot of room for research, thinking, studying and practicing... I'm frustrated at how much I suck at thermalling, but I'm determined to develop a consistent method and succeed... Thank you so much for posting!

    Isn't the risk of outlanding pretty low with FES?

    • @EricCarden
      @EricCarden 3 роки тому

      Hi Marcus. If I never get out of easy reach of an airstrip, then having the FES doesn't significantly change the risk of outlanding (it's pretty close to zero with or without FES). And my personal philosophy is to not depend on the FES to help me reach an airstrip (i.e., I aim to avoid flying to a place where I need either the motor or to find lift in order to avoid an outlanding). I got the FES mainly to have the ability to self-launch, not to make getting out of reach of an airstrip safer.

    Just to say, I watched this video just before my first solo single seater aerotow. I found and stayed in 3 or 4 major thermals, and kept the aircraft in the air for as long as I wanted. In the 4 flights since then, I have been able to find and stick in the thermals I've found. I've not yet returned home because I needed to, rather than wanted to. It's not terribly difficult to apply, it's systematic, and doesn't require an awful lot of intricate thinking to understand what's going on. I'm really grateful that I stumbled across this video, it's really helped my flying, and it feels like a little gift of knowledge. thank you Eric for making and sharing this.

    "Concise - Adjective: Marked by brevity of expression or statement: free from all elaboration and superfluous detail." There is very good information here unfortunately most probably bailed within the first 5 minutes. A solution that helped me get through this 30 minutes of information was to change the playback speed to 170% minimum. Also, use the right arrow key to skip 5 seconds ahead with each press to get past the minutiae that serves no purpose. Eric thanks for the video, it made a lot of points much more clear after I came up with a method that allowed me to get through it.
